Roots Red Sea is, simply put, like being on a liveaboard, but on land.

Roots Red Sea is a small friendly resort aimed at scuba divers, snorkellers and those who want a quiet, peaceful, relaxed atmosphere but with the convenience of having the small traditional town of El Quseir on its doorstep. The tag as a camp should not be taken too literally, it relates more to the location than the outstanding accommodations with modern facilities.

Equi-distant between Hurghada and Marsa Alam, Roots will collect you from your arrival airport in their own transport, and the journey will take about an hour and a half (maximum). Upon arrival, jump off the bus and hit the bar - the staff take care of all your bags and bring your room keys to you at dinner, where they will give you a welcome briefing and explain the setup of the camp.

The focus here is all about diving. The British owners are based on site, and they, together with their team of staff, know exactly what a dive holiday is all about, and work tirelessly to deliver the goods. Do not be put off by the (old) name 'Camp' - Trip Adviser are so impressed that Roots have won a Certificate of Excellence based on the quality of the reviews.

This is a very authentic dive resort right on the edge of the desert, with shore diving galore right on site on some of the Red Seas very best and under dived sites. Marine life is amazing and the whole ambience is calm and relaxing. It's perfect to unwind after adrenaline filled days underwater.

The Catering Roots has its very own chef and catering crew who provide you with three full cooked meals a day. Breakfast is served from 07:30 each morning, and offers toast, cereals, pancakes, porridge, fruit and young hurts, with tea, coffee and juice in abundance. Hot breakfasts are cooked to order, and the chef is a dab hand at poached eggs and porridge! Lunch is top quality diver food. A choice of two main dishes, with salads, breads, local dips and fruit, together with soft drinks. Shepherds pie, bolognese, pasta bakes and such are common, although the chef and his team can provide various alternatives for those who have particular dietary requirements. Dinner is served either in the restaurant, or as a BBQ on the Roots Beach, just across the road. Again salads, breads, and two or three dishes are served, and the kofta, chicken kebabs and burgers are excellent, especially when eaten under the stars! The catering crew bring the bar to the beach too, so no walking to top up your Sakara!

The Diving This part of Egypt is largely un-dived, and therefore you can expect the healthiest of corals, and masses of marine life. All the bucket list critters tend to be here in sensible numbers as human interruption has not impacted them. Night dives with 5 or more Spanish Dancers on the house reef are daily occurrences for example. Diving is mainly from the shore, and the local dive sites all have shaded kitting up areas, toilets and showers. All your equipment is transported to and from the dive sites for you so there is no need to hump heavy gear around - even for the house reef dives. A fully equipped dive centre sits right on site at Roots, offering all the support you need for the local diving and further afield excursions.

The house reef at Roots comes as standard to all guests, and you can dive on an unguided and unlimited basis here in daylight hours. Basically, after an orientation, the reef is yours. The house reef itself offers a great choice. The lagoon at the point of entry is a perfect training area, with a large sandy bed at 8-15 metres depth, surrounded by the reef itself, giving students a great place to learn and further develop their skills. The depth drops down beyond 40m within 50 metres of the shore, so speciality certifications can also be done here without a problem. Leaving the lagoon itself, the south route takes you onto a beautiful wall, starting with a pinnacle right on the corner of the lagoon, complete with its own bright red anemone on the top. A good orientation point.

Moving further round to the south, the reef opens up and provides several swim trough's, and caverns too. To the north, the topology is different. Huge pinnacles dropping down to below 40m open up to again provide gorges and caverns, and schooling Spanish mackerel, octopi, turtles and horned puffer fish are common sightings here, and dolphins are also often seen. Not bad for a house reef. The house reef also provides the base for the INON photography courses run here, and part of the PSA Cavern courses.

Additionally to the house reef diving our package includes one day diving either the Salem Express Wreck or Elphinstone by Hard Boat. Please note that Elphinstone requires an Advanced Open Water certification. If you want to you can upgrade your packages to include extra local shore diving, and zodiac diving, as well as taking in additional specialist excursions to Elphinstone, the wreck of the Salem Express, and the dugong and guitar sharks (and green turtles) at Abu Dabab. In all, there are over 35 different dive sites available on a daily basis from Roots, all offering top quality diving without the crowds.

Evenings Evenings are spent relaxing around the camp fire, having a massage from the resident masseuse in the spa chalet, supping a Sakara or two, or challenging the staff or the rest of your group to a game of volleyball on the court in the centre of the camp. Bring a guitar, or just plug your MP3 player into the stereo system. A lounge in the restaurant area has a full tv and stereo system, and there is even a large screen for movies or photography shows by the camp fire. There is a small library and selection of board games too, and sometimes there is a formal poker night laid on by the resident hustler and owner, Steve.
